Summer means sunshine, beaches, and pools... but also a few challenges for our skin! Between seawater, chlorine, and intense sun, our skin goes through a lot. Don't panic! In this article, I'll explain how these summer elements affect your skin and, most importantly, how to adjust your routine to care for and protect it.
The Effects of Seawater
Seawater, rich in salt (about 3.5%) and minerals like magnesium and calcium, has mixed effects on our skin.
The Benefits:
The salt in seawater naturally exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells, and minerals, especially magnesium, have antibacterial properties. The result? A little swim in the sea can soothe some skin irritations and leave your skin feeling soft.
The Downsides:
Salty water can also dehydrate your skin by drawing out moisture through osmosis. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to eczema, be cautious of irritations that can leave your skin dry and uncomfortable. So, remember to generously hydrate your skin after a day at the beach!
The Effects of Chlorine
Chlorine, used to disinfect pools, is great for combating bacteria... but not so much for your skin.
The Benefits:
Thanks to chlorine, pool water remains clean and safe, reducing the risk of skin infections. A real plus for regular swimmers!
The Downsides:
Chlorine tends to strip away the skin's natural oils, leading to dryness and increased sensitivity. It can even disrupt the skin barrier, making it more vulnerable. Not to mention the itching and redness that the more sensitive individuals may experience. If you spend a lot of time swimming, be sure to rehydrate your skin to prevent it from becoming overly dry and irritated.
The Effects of Summer Sun
We love the sun for its energy and light, but it can also be a real enemy for our skin.
The Benefits:
Moderate sun exposure is essential for vitamin D production, which plays a crucial role in bone health and the immune system. But be careful; it’s all about balance!
The Downsides:
If you notice that your acne seems to improve at the start of summer, beware—it can be misleading. UV rays temporarily dry out pimples, giving the illusion of clearer skin. However, this effect doesn’t last. In fact, the sun stimulates oil production and thickens the upper layer of the skin, which can eventually clog pores. The result: a few weeks later, acne may reappear, often more intensely—this is known as the rebound effect.
Moreover, UVA and UVB rays are not your friends. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for premature aging (wrinkles, loss of elasticity), while UVB rays affect the surface and cause sunburns, which can have long-term harmful effects.
My Practical Tips for Protecting Your Skin
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Whether after swimming in the sea or in a pool, your skin needs rehydration. Rinse with fresh water to remove any salt or chlorine residue, then apply a rich moisturizer. Ceramides, for example, are your best friends for strengthening your skin barrier.
Sunscreen: Your Best Ally:
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply generously. Don't forget to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming. For maximum protection, also consider lightweight clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
Gentle Cleansing:
After a day in the sun or at the pool, opt for a gentle, soap-free cleanser that won't irritate your skin. The goal is to remove impurities while preserving your skin’s natural balance.
After-Sun Care:
Soothing your skin after sun exposure is essential. Choose products containing aloe vera or bisabolol to calm redness and inflammation. Serums based on vitamin C or E can also be great for combating the free radicals generated by UV rays.
Eat a Balanced Diet:
Your diet plays an important role in your skin's health. Eating foods rich in antioxidants (fruits, vegetables) helps protect your skin from damage. Omega-3s, found in fatty fish or nuts, are also excellent allies for maintaining hydration.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed, so take care of your skin to avoid long-term surprises. Adjust your routine, adopt good habits, and you'll be ready for a summer of serenity! ☀️
